The New Teacher Symposium is a professional development experience, held in conjunction with the Association for Career and Technical Education’s (ACTE) national conference, CareerTech VISION 2023, with follow-up content and networking for the remainder of the school year. 

The Symposium is open to any first-year career and technical education teacher. Current membership in ACTE is not required to apply, but if selected, membership would be required to participate.  

Twenty individuals will be selected from completed applications that will be evaluated by the program’s advisory group.  

This year’s conference will be in Phoenix November 29  – December 2. Programming will begin on Wednesday, November 29, with special focus sessions for symposium participants and opportunities to attend state and division meetings as available. Wednesday’s sessions provide customized professional development, networking, and mentoring with CTE teachers and stakeholders from across the country. Participants will be required to attend all sessions in person from Wednesday morning, November 29 through the closing general session held Saturday December 2. Additional activities will be held virtually approximately once per month for the remainder of the school year.  

The Symposium will focus on the following: 

  • Inclusion/Access/Equity/Diversity (IAED)

  • Classroom Management for the CTE professional 

  • Work-based learning

  • Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs)

  • High-quality CTE framework (and curriculum)

  • Assessment and certifications

  • CTE Learn Portal and professional development

  • Networking and mentoring with ACTE colleagues


Applicants must submit:

  1. A completed application form.

  2. A no more than one-page (up to 500 of words) letter expressing your interest in and commitment to serving as a participant in the New CTE Teacher Symposium and how you intend to use the learning obtained as a result of the experience.

  3. A no more than one-page statement (up to 500 words) answering the question “What have been your biggest challenges as a first-year CTE educator?” 

  4. A résumé or C.V.

  5. A letter of support from your principal.

  6. Completion of Program of Work Agreement

  7. Completion of Financial Obligation Agreement

  8. A headshot to be used for Symposium promotions

All requirements of the application must be completed in order to be considered. Please submit your application by the deadline.  Successful applicants will be notified once the Advisory Group reaches a decision, and will receive a complimentary registration to ACTE’s CareerTech VISION 2023 conference.
